How To Import OE6 Files & Settings To New PC
2 days ago, I wrote an article about “How To Export OE6 Files & Settings From Old PC“. For those who didn’t read that, please return to my previous post before reading this. Today, I will show you how to restore those OE6 files backuped last time to your new PC (or clean reformatted PC). Get a cup of tea, sit tight & make sure those backuped files are ready. Are you ready?
Backuped Items Checklist
» Old Inbox Folder [x]
» Old Account Settings [x]
» Old Address Book [x]
Step 1
Open your Outlook Express application. Account Wizard popup dialog will appear, just press cancel. Now, you should have similar OE interface just like mine.

Step 2
Right click on your Inbox & select “Properties“. Copy the Outlook Express path & open it in explorer. Close OE & delete “Outlook Express” folder permanently.
“C:\Documents and Settings\your-user-account\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{this-number-may-differ-for-each-pc}\Microsoft\”

Step 3
Browse to your backuped folder. Copy “Outlook Express” folder into “Microsoft” directory. Now, you’re done restoring your old email messages.

Step 4
Now, run OE again & proceed to “Tools >> Accounts“. Click “Import” button and select your backuped email accounts. Now, you’re done restoring your old email accounts.

*** If you don’t have an address book, please skip Step 5 & you’re done.
Step 5
Go to “Tools >> Address Book” {or press Ctrl+Shift+B} for opening address book manager. Then, “File >> Import >> Address Book (WAB)”. Select your backuped Address Book & click Open. Now, you should have your address book restored.

Done
Go Online, click “Send/Receive” button & you should see OE start downloading email messages from your mail server. Congratulations & you’re done restoring Outlook Express. Happy Weekend Guys.

Your import and export notes were very helpful. I have another question for you. Everytime my OE6 closes it asks me the following question:
To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes. [OK] or [Cancel]. I always choose [Cancel] and I’m tired of it. Is there anyway to make OE stop asking me this question.

Hi D. Thanx for your comments. And for your question, do you store all your messages in a single folder (eg. Inbox) or with multiple folder. If you’re using single folder, try move them into a new folder or categorize them. Please monitor your *.dbx files by using Step 2 above. If you’re using FAT32 filesystem, there a some limitation for single file size bigger than 2GB. I hope this help you out. Cheers Mate.

For that try-reading dbx files, program keeps all messages, contacts and attachments in the same file in spite of the fact, that it may be dangerous, works with corrupted files, that were damaged by any reason, safe to open files of dbx format, even when your mailbox is infected of seriously damaged as a result of power failure, extracts all messages as separate files in eml format, if you’d like to modify the path to output folder, that is set by default, it can be done with Choose Save Folder function.
